26-655 Complete Required Implicit Bias Training
Date: 06/12/26
Ensure your training is complete and documented to support your facility’s compliance
As a reminder, healthcare facilities must submit annual proof that perinatal physicians and practitioners have completed the mandatory implicit bias training. Your role may be subject to these requirements and your completion status affects your facility’s compliance.
What is required
California law requires physicians and practitioners involved in perinatal care to complete implicit bias training and maintain documentation with their facility.
This requirement applies to those involved in perinatal care, including:
- Physicians and surgeons, including obstetricians and pediatricians
- Physician assistants
- Nurses and licensed vocational nurses
- Medical assistants
- Other staff who support or provide perinatal care
Physicians and practitioners do not submit proof directly to the state. Facilities must report compliance to the California Attorney General. However, physicians and practitioners are responsible for completing training and ensuring their records are accurate.
Effective dates and training timelines
- Effective now: Annual reporting requirements are in effect for 2026.
- New physicians and practitioners: Must complete training within
6 months of hire. - All physicians and practitioners: Must complete refresher training every 2 years.
How to access and complete training
The implicit bias training is available online at no cost and meets California state requirements.

Compliance impact
Your training status affects your facility’s compliance with state reporting requirements.
If your training is not complete or not documented, your facility may be reported as noncompliant and could face:
- Financial penalties.
- Public reporting of noncompliance.
- Additional regulatory or administrative action.
While physicians and practitioners are not individually fined, incomplete training may place your facility at risk and require corrective action.
How proof of compliance is submitted
Healthcare facilities are responsible for submitting proof of provider training compliance to the state.
The California Attorney General sends a secure online survey each year to the facility’s designated point of contact. This survey is the official method used to report whether physicians and practitioners have completed required implicit bias training.
You must ensure their training is completed and documented with your facility so it can be reported accurately.
If your training is not documented, your facility may be reported as noncompliant.
