In an effort to further increase awareness of implicit bias among maternity care professionals and spur behavioral change, the Plan encourages physicians and other providers to engage in the Strengthening Cultural Humility, Dismantling Implicit Bias in the Healthcare Setting online training presented by Dr. Sayida Peprah-Wilson. The role of implicit biases on healthcare outcomes has become a concern as some cite that implicit biases contribute to health disparities, professionals' attitudes toward and interactions with patients, quality of care, diagnoses, and treatment decisions.

Complete the no cost online training course for implicit bias

This training will focus on increasing cultural conscientiousness, sensitivity and humility. It will also broaden participants’ awareness of their own implicit biases (subtle, unconscious assumptions about others) and equip them with tools to engage with patients/clients, in more open, respectful and empathetic ways.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify implicit and explicit biases
  • Define types of biases including confirmation bias, affinity bias and halo effect
  • Describe principles of cultural humility and cultural safety
  • Practice skills for cross-cultural communication

This course meets the requirements of California State Laws on implicit bias training for:

  • AB-1407: Nursing schools and programs to include implicit bias training as a core part of their curriculum.
  • AB-241: Physicians and surgeons.
  • SB-464: Perinatal care staff at hospitals.

Maternal social disparities create unsafe conditions

Pregnancy-related deaths and life-threatening pregnancy-related complications are higher in the United States than other high-income countries1. In the United States, Black women are three times more likely to experience severe maternal morbidity, and twice as likely to suffer from short or long-term complications than women of other racial and ethnic groups2.

Access maternal health equity trainings and resources available online

The California Health Care Foundation supported the development of a free one-hour e-learning course from Diversity Science. This training meets requirements in SB 464, the California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act (Health and Safety Code, section 123630.3), that perinatal care providers receive implicit bias training.
