24-1224 Focus on Being Named to 2025 Honor Rolls That Assess Patient Safety and Opioid Care & SUD

Date: 11/25/24

Access HSAG's QI resources to address key metrics and check your Fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

Health Net, on behalf of CalViva Health, urges your hospital to assess your performance on the Patient Safety Honor Roll as you plan for 2025. Check your Leapfrog Safety Grade and use Leapfrog’s survey and the Health Services Advisory Group’s (HSAG’s) quality improvement (QI) tools to improve on struggling metrics.

Did your hospital make this year’s Patient Safety Honor Roll?

Congratulations to hospitals that were named to the 2024 Honor Roll. (Confirm by checking the “Programs” section on Cal Hospital Compare.) Be sure to highlight this achievement on your website and in your community.

If you missed earning a place on the Honor Roll this year, assess areas of care that require improvement. For details on the Honor Roll’s metrics and methods, send an email.

Take advantage of QI resources from HSAG to drive improvements

Find HSAG tutorials on key metrics and other resources at HSAG Infection Prevention and HSAG Quality Tools and Resources. HSAG has made its hospital quality improvement contractor resources available to all hospitals. For questions, reach out to HSAG’s Senior Executive Director, Christine Bailey.

All patient safety programs should work to prevent hospital-acquired infections (SIR <=1.0) and to provide appropriate sepsis care. The Plan is especially focused on performance for the following measures:

  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)
  • Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
  • Clostridioides difficile (C. diff)
  • Colorectal surgical site infections (SSI-colon)
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Sepsis management (SEP-1)

Note: Cal Hospital Compare opted not to launch a Sepsis Care Honor Roll this year. However, this metric remains a priority for the Plan. HSAG offers technical guidance on appropriate sepsis care at HSAG Infection Prevention.

Check your Hospital Safety Grade and Annual Survey performance from The Leapfrog Group

Check your Fall 2024 grade and survey results and identify areas that may require additional focus. Cal Hospital Compare considers performance on the Leapfrog Safety Grade when calculating the Patient Safety Honor Roll. In addition, the Plan includes the Safety Grade on our internal Hospital Quality Scorecard.

  • High performers can promote this consumer-friendly grade to raise local awareness about your achievement.

The Plan urges your hospital to participate in Leapfrog’s annual survey. To participate in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey or to learn more, visit Leapfrog hospital survey or contact The Leapfrog Help Desk. Note the Safety Grade methodology is changing this fall for non-participants. Go to Hospital Safety Grade for details.

A new feature on Leapfrog’s website offers examples of vendors that target patient safety needs in the marketplace. Learn more at Leapfrog Group Innovators.

Prepare for a new focus on substance use disorder (SUD) in the 2025 Opioid Care and SUD Honor Roll

In 2025, Cal Hospital Compare plans to expand the Opioid Care Honor Roll to include content on Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD) care. Get ready by reviewing the new self-assessment tool and other resources on Cal Hospital Compare in the “Programs” section under “Opioid Care and SUD Honor Roll.” The application window is scheduled to open on April 1, 2025.

The Plan urges members to consider hospital quality when choosing a site for care

The Plan launched a new webpage this year with step-by-step guidance on using quality tools to choose a hospital. Find the page at Hospital Quality & Ratings This resource adds to existing links to information about hospital quality ratings. High performers benefit from this kind of messaging about informed choice and how to compare hospitals.

The Plan is committed to supporting your efforts to achieve excellence in patient safety. For more information about the Plan’s programs in this area, contact Barb Wentworth, Ph.D.
