23-393m Find Out What Has Changed With the New IHA

Date: 05/17/23

IHA tip sheet helps physicians complete initial health appointments (IHA)

Initial health appointments (IHAs, formerly “initial health assessments”) enable physicians to provide new patients with preventive care services within the primary care medical setting.

What are the changes to the IHA?

As of January 1, 2023, the IHA is referred to as an “initial health appointment” instead of an “initial health assessment.” The new IHA no longer requires an Individual Health Education Behavioral Assessment (IHEBA) or a Staying Healthy Assessment (SHA) for each member.1

Physicians or other providers must perform an IHA within a primary care medical setting and periodically re-administer according to requirements in the Population Health Management (PHM) Policy Guide and managed care plan contract requirements. Physicians or other providers must complete IHAs for all CalViva Health members. An IHA includes a member's physical and mental health history, risk identification, needed preventive services, health education, disease diagnoses and treatment plans.

Physicians can access an initial health appointment (IHA) tip sheet for help with requirements, exceptions, service codes, and recommendations. The tip sheet is available in the Education, Training and Other Materials section of the Provider Library
