Perform a urine drug screening for patients who are admitted with an opiate overdose
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment (ISUDT) Program team reviewed CDCR patients’ use of an emergency room (ER) department, where the admission was an opiate overdose. The review was based on the ICD-10 diagnosis code(s) billed on the claim. CDCR physicians have been reminded to call the hospital to request a urine drug screen when referring their patients to the ER.
The CDCR and CCHCS ISUDT Program is requesting providers to:
- Perform a urine drug screen with quantitative results for opiates when the CDCR patient presents in the ER with an opiate overdose.
CDCR patients who are on medication-assisted therapy for substance use disorder or opioid use disorder are monitored for their participation in the ISUDT Program. Of those patients who were on medication-assisted therapy prior to their opioid-related overdose, patients on naltrexone and methadone were presented to the ER in much higher proportions than the general population of patients.
